IEEE Connecting Experts – Goutam Chattopadhyay from NASA’s JPL: “Are We Alone?”

Robotics missions such as Voyager, which continues to go beyond our solar system, missions to Mars and other planets, exploring the stars and galaxies for astrophysics missions, exploring and answering the question, “are we alone in this universe?” has been the driving force for NASA scientists for more than six decades.

 

We are addressing The Question from the technical perspective by bringing you a webinar that will present the latest research carried out at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, entitled:

“Are We Alone? NASA Technologies to Find Life Beyond Earth and Answers to Other Science Questions”,

by Prof. Goutam Chattopadhyay, PhD, a Senior Scientist at the NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology and a Visiting Professor at the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology.

The webinar is starting on September 23 at 16:10 UTC as part of IEEE Young Professionals track at IEEE Region 8 Virtual Student and Young Professional Congress 2020 and will be streamed on our Facebook page. The talk is co-organized with IEEE Microwaves Theory and Techniques Society Young Professionals.

Young Professionals Track at IEEE Region 8 Virtual Student and Young Professionals Congress 2020

IEEE Region 8 Virtual Student and Young Professionals Congress (R8 vSYP) will be held during September 14th – 26th 2020 with three hours of daily content, and in total of more than 40 hours of keynote talks, addresses from IEEE officials, workshops and awards, supported by in-person or hybrid form of local meetings and presentations in countries throughout R8, which will be broadcasted for everyone as part of the program. Some of the content are speeches of IEEE President Elect Susan “Kathy” Land, IEEE Region 8 Director Magdalena Salazar Palma, technical presentation “Are We Alone?” by Goutam Chattopadhyay, a senior scientist from NASA JPL, finals of the IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Initiative, and many more.

 

The Congress is a virtual substitute of the regular bi-annual IEEE Region 8 Student and Young Professional Congress that gathers over 400 people from whole IEEE Region 8. Following the same spirit, the R8 vSYP will involve a series of plenary sessions, workshops, competitions, social activities, and many more – through separate Student, Young Professional and Women in Engineering tracks. It follows a good practice of virtual conferences, summits, and other business events, while striving to imbue the tailored focus for our students and young professionals. This implies learning from experts, learning from each other, learning both about the technology and cultures, strong networking, getting feedback from our volunteers to steer Region 8 and the whole IEEE, and of course, doing it all while having fun along the way!

IEEE Region 8 Virtual SYP Congress

The current situation caused by the COVID 19 pandemic has also affected the IEEE. Unfortunately, meetings involving physical gatherings were canceled, but IEEE volunteers did not lose the will and motivation to design new projects by adapting to imposed circumstances and constraints.

 

The IEEE R8 SYP Congress team, IEEE R8 SAC, IEEE R8 WIE, IEEE R8 CCT, and IEEE R8 YP introduce the IEEE R8 Virtual SYP in a hybrid format!

 

The first-ever virtual SYP congress of IEEE Region 8 will be held from the 14th to the 26th of September 2020. The program of the congress’s unique form will include the opening and closing ceremonies, keynote and plenary sessions, workshops, awards, and some unique social activities. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts and each other about IEEE and technology, whilst exchanging experience and networking, and of course having some fun along the way!

 

The event will allow for in-person local meetings where local government and health regulations allow, and the meet-ups will be broadcast to other local meet-ups through R8. Volunteers are encouraged to connect virtually from their homes where meet-ups are not allowed.

The vSYP Congress will be distributed across the entire Region 8. Each day will feature different host sections presenting SYP content to the young engineers of the region. Volunteer ambassadors representing the sections will be responsible for the implementation of local events, and the optional personal meetings in accordance with the local government regulations. In addition to attending online events, they will have the freedom to supplement the vSYP program with their ideas and thus putting their own personal stamp on the event.

 

The digital format, where there are no limits on the number of participants or geographical distance, will allow the congress to have a much larger audience, and enable attendees to grow their networks digitally. Demonstration of the ALOHA Packet Radio Data Network, 1971
In June 1971, the ALOHA packet radio data network began providing inter-island access to computing facilities at the University of Hawaii. ALOHAnet was the first to demonstrate that communication channels could be effectively and efficiently shared on a large scale using simple random access protocols. It led directly to the development of Ethernet and personal wireless communication technologies.

Hackathon “Ethical dilemmas in AI – Engineering the way out”

IEEE and the Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE), in collaboration with DataEthics.eu and the University of Copenhagen, are co-organizing the Hackathon “Ethical dilemmas in AI – Engineering the way out”, which will take place on-line on 3-4 September 2020 from 09:00 to 12:00. From IEEE side, the event is sponsored by the European Public Policy Committee and the Standards Association, and supported by the Vienna Office.

 

The hackathon, which will feature the participation of ca. 50 experts (25 from IEEE and 25 from ANE), will explore the gaps between existing guidelines and recommendations for addressing ethical issues with respect to AI technologies and the realities experienced by engineers in practice.

 

During the hackathon you will:

  • Work with professionals from the Nordic and other countries to collaboratively develop best practices and recommendations for engineers to navigate the application of new AI technologies,

  • Share own experiences and expertise, evaluate and discuss current challenges with respect to AI technologies,

  • Expand your network and exchange experiences with peers from the Nordic countries and beyond.

IEEE Connecting Experts webinars by IEEE Young Professionals – July 2020

Building on successful May and June editions, and provided feedback, we are now bringing you five webinars in July on topics of Entrepreneurship and Technology. The program has grown largely since the beginning and we are now hosting our first IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. The program is also extended by additional collaboration of several local, regional and global IEEE organizational units: Turkey and Norway affinity groups, IEEE Standards Association, IEEE Communications Society Young Professionals, IEEE Microwaves Theory and Techniques Society Young Professionals and IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Initiative.

 

 

For IEEE members who would like to actively participate in the sessions by providing text, voice or video comments and questions during discussions, you can join Webex calls. For this, please register your e-mail within the following form (you may use IEEE login as well) and you will receive tailored details for each upcoming webinar few days before. You can also find this option in the IEEE Connecting Experts Calendar that is regularly updated with Webex registration details together with events, topic and speaker descriptions.

 

After July, we are going to continue again in September in special form of tailored content for Region 8 Virtual Student and Young Professionals Congress 2020 (vSYP 2020).

IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals Awards 2023

Yep, it’s that time of the year again: awards season is here! And as an active Young Professionals volunteer, you should keep your eye on these two:

  • IEEE Region 8 Outstanding Young Professionals Affinity Group Award
  • IEEE Region 8 Young Professional Exceptional Volunteer Award

The submission form is filled online, through IEEE Region 8 Awards online platform.

 

The nominations deadline for both the R8 Young Professionals Awards is the 31st of May. All nominations submitted after this date will not be taken into consideration.

 

We advise you to start preparing the required nomination materials as soon as possible, since it usually takes longer than expected. The vTools activity reports are required and fundamental during the winner’s selection process, so make sure all your activities are submitted in the vTools platform through event reports by the time you apply.

 

PLEASE NOTE THAT NOMINATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED VIA EMAIL!

2023 Region 8 Outstanding Young Professionals Affinity Group Award – for activities in 2022

Nomination period is open until the 31st of May 2023.

Description:

To recognize Young Professionals Affinity Groups (AG) within Region 8 for their efforts, successes and achievements in carrying out the mission of IEEE YP and the aims of IEEE in Region 8 within their Section during the calendar year of 2022. Recognition will be given to the Young Professionals AG that displayed the most successful maintenance of ongoing efforts, as well as the development and implementation of new programs. These activities shall leave an important imprint on the Section and on Region 8. The winning AG will receive a certificate providing the citation for the award and a cash prize of $400 granted by the R8 YP Subcommittee to the corresponding Young Professionals AG.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The Young Professionals AG must have at least 20 Young Professionals members;
  • All activities from 2019 must be submitted correctly to vTools on the form of event reports by the time of the application;
  • The Young Professionals AG must not have received another IEEE award in the past 12 months;
  • The $400 prize must be used to support local Young Professionals activities;
  • Affinity Groups which have been awarded the Outstanding Young Professionals Affinity Group award in the past 5 years (for years of 2018-2022) are not eligible to participate (Israel, Croatia, UK & Ireland, Turkey, Nigeria).

Nomination process:

Proposals for nominations of a Young Professionals AG for this award will be made by the Section and supported by 1 letter of endorsement by the Section Chair or another member of the Section’s Executive Committee. Alternatively, a Young Professionals Chair can also nominate a Young Professionals AG, provided that his/her nomination is endorsed by at least 1 other Young Professionals member and preferably also by a member of the Executive Committee of the Section. The documents needed to create a nomination are:

  1. Nomination letter from Section Chair or another member of the Section’s Executive Committee OR nomination letter from the Young Professionals AG chair and another Young Professionals AG member and a member of the Section’s Executive Committee;

Description:

To recognize a volunteer within Region 8 for his/her dedication towards the mission of IEEE Young Professionals. The recognition will be given to a devoted Young Professional member that presents the most successful maintenance of ongoing efforts, leadership skills, and remarkable development and implementation of new ideas and programs within the last year. These activities shall have an important impact on the Section and on Region 8 Young Professional community, and other IEEE members. The winner will receive an award and diploma providing the citation for the award granted by the Region 8 Young Professionals Subcommittee.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The volunteer must not have received another IEEE award in the past 12 months;
  • The candidate’s Affinity Group must not have been awarded with the Region 8 Outstanding Young Professionals Affinity Group Award in the previous year;
  • The Region 8 Young Professionals Exceptional Volunteer Award nominee cannot belong to an Young Professionals Affinity Group nominated to the Region 8 Outstanding Young Professionals Affinity Group Award in the same year;
  • The volunteer must be a Young Professional member of an active Young Professionals Affinity Group in good standing, i.e. with all the required reporting up to date and elections in order;
  • Members of Region 8 Young Professionals Subcommittee are not eligible to be nominated;
  • Self nominations are not allowed.

Nomination process:

  1. Endorsement letter from Section Chair or other member of the Section’s Executive Committee or the Young Professionals AG chair;

Special meeting on Innovative startups and entrepreneurs – IEEE MELECON 2020

MELECON 2020 is organizing innovations pitching competition followed by a special session of discussions on the topic with emphasis on recent events and upcoming economic trends.

 

This special meeting is structured in two panels dedicated to entrepreneurship financial and institutional supports and to some examples of successful startups. The first panel will focus on entrepreneurship supports for success. Funding, organization, management, business strategies and planning, incubators, guidance, mentorship, and institutional supports will be discussed with a particular focus on the COVID-19 scenario and consequences. The second panel will present some examples of successful and innovative startups with accent on challenges at time of pandemic.
