Announcing an opportunity to join the brand new IEEE Region 8 Sigma Magazine Team

We are currently searching for Associate Editors to join the IEEE Region 8 Sigma Magazine editorial team. If you are looking to be part of a brand new venture in Region 8, our “Spectrum-like” magazine Sigma, and embrace an opportunity to unleash your creative side then we want to talk to you! As an Associate Editor, you would be responsible for the management of articles and stories for our magazine – you will be responsible for a few stories per issue – this includes: commissioning stories from prospective authors, working with authors to create stories, proof-reading and peer review (where appropriate) as well as having the opportunity to contribute to the direction of Sigma with ideas for content and story-lines. We realise that very few of our volunteers will have experience in working for a magazine – so no experience necessary (if you do, great! get in contact asap!) – however any editorial contributions you may have would definitely be a bonus.

So, if you have ideas for content, want to be part of a new and vibrant team, and want to volunteer to contribute to your Region then please do get in touch with us. The roles and responsibilities of an Associate Editor are listed below. We wish to speak to anyone who is interested and will be holding an online information session for anyone who wants to know more – so please do get in contact with the EiC by filling in this quick form here (it will take you 20s at the most) and we will be in contact.

Associate Editors (AEs) shall:

Liaise with the Editor-in-chief (EiC), assisting in preparing content for multiple issues of IEEE Region 8 Sigma Magazine
Be responsible for a minimum of three articles of Sigma per year, we envisage a commitment of 2 hours/ week initially* – taking on the role of content-creator/ owner/ lead of these articles
Liaise with potential authors, article authors, the EiC, and the rest of the board to supply their articles for the issue deadlines
As part of the editorial board participate in brain-storming sessions for content and other editorial board meetings as may be necessary for the smooth running of the magazine
Manage the peer review for any content that requires it **
*This will change as the editorial board grows and the number of issues of Sigma regularise over time. The planned number of issues per year is three to four. **Peer review for magazine articles will vary depending on the article and will not be the same as for technical articles.

Second Event of ‘Early Career Talk’ Call for Participation

IEEE WIE UKI goal is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines globally.

We envision a vibrant community of IEEE women and men collectively using their diverse talents to innovate
for the benefit of humanity. IEEE WIE UK and Ireland through the Ambassador Scheme are calling women in engineering to participate in a technical, inspirational and empowering session tagged “EARLY CAREER TALK”.

This programme supports women from academia or industry who have been in an industry/postgraduate
position for less than 10 years. The first IEEE WIE UKI “EARLY CAREER TALK” event was successfully held
on April 8th 2021 has attracting attention from both academia and industry.

This second event converges the novel (state-of-the-Art) research areas in Engineering,
establishing networking/collaboration links, exploring new research opportunities for developing
interactions between Academia, Industry and Government fostering economic and social development.

Criteria for who should apply and how to apply:

This session welcomes speakers/presenters from any part of the world who are:
• PhD students close to graduation and have published papers in respectful conferences/journals.
• Engineers who have participated in innovative projects.

In November 2018, he was appointed as the VC and Process Architect of the IEEE ‘s global Ethics Certification Programme for Autonomous & Intelligent Systems (ECPAIS). In this role, Ali has architected the approach and led the process and development of an extensive suites of five Ethics Criteria comprising Transparency, Accountability, Algorithmic Bias, Privacy and Responsible Governance for Certification of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (AIS).

Objective

This special meeting is structured in two panels dedicated to:

entrepreneurship financial and institutional supports, the importance of ethics in technology;

some examples of successful startups.

The first panel will focus on entrepreneurship supports for success. Funding, organization, management, business strategies and planning, incubators, guidance, mentorship, and institutional supports will be discussed. A presentation of the recent advancement in the P7000 standard will describe the process for addressing ethical concerns during system design.
The second panel will present some examples of successful and innovative startups with the accent on challenges at times of pandemic and with an illustration of best practices, problems encountered, and solutions.

Call for Best Entrepreneurship Activity Pitch Presentation

This call is devoted to young Startups (TRL 1-3) and entrepreneurs to showcase successful entrepreneurship ideas in the field of interest of IEEE.

The competitors shall prepare a 5 minutes video: “My entrepreneurship idea in 5 minutes” in which will present their entrepreneurship idea and activity using slides, pictures, photos, graphics, lab demo, etc., to describe in the most convincing and attractive way their innovative idea, achievements, and field of application.

The participants at the IEEE RTSI START-UP AND ENTREPRENEUR VIDEO EVENT will be able to vote for their favorite video using a special application (i.e. Mentimeter) on their smartphones.

The competition will take place during IEEE RTSI 2021 “electronic virtual conference” (on September 6, 2021) and the participation is free of charge. See the program schedule on the web page of the conference to know the exact time. More details about: the platform to be used for the “live streaming event” and how to access, will be available on the conference web and sent to the video authors.

All competitors will receive a participation certificate and the best video will be awarded a customized IEEE certificate.

Entrepreneurs willing to participate in this competition shall send an e-mail to this address: [email protected] no later than July 25.

In the Object of the e-mail the participant in this competition should write:

Best Entrepreneurship Activity Pitch Presentation – name surname

In the text of the e-mail the participant shall include the following info:

title of the video
name and affiliation of the author

Details about uploading procedures will be sent to participants by e-mail. The deadline for the submission of the video is August 10, 2021. All videos shall have MP4 format, size not larger than 100 MB and they shall not be longer than 5 minutes. A special commission will select the best videos (maximum 16 videos) that will be presented and voted by participants to the event.

All videos will be uploaded on the IEEE Italy Section web and media (depending on author permission).

About Prof Petropulu:

Athina P. Petropulu is a Distinguished Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Rutgers, having served as chair of the department during 2010-2016. Prior to joining Rutgers, she was a Professor of ECE at Drexel University (1992-2010). She held Visiting Scholar appointments at SUPELEC, Universite’ Paris Sud, Princeton University, and the University of Southern California. Dr. Petropulu’s research interests span the area of statistical signal processing, wireless communications, signal processing in networking, physical layer security, and radar signal processing. Her research has been funded by various government industry sponsors including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Office of Naval research, the US Army, the National Institute of Health, the Whitaker Foundation, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

Dr. Petropulu is Fellow of IEEE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and recipient of the 1995 Presidential Faculty Fellow Award given by NSF and the White House. She is 2022 President of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and 2020 President-Elect of IEEE SPS. She has served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (2009-2011) and IEEE Signal Processing Society Vice President-Conferences (2006-2008). She was General Chair of 2020 and 2021 IEEE SPS PROGRESS Workshops, General Co-Chair of the 2018 IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC), Kalamata Greece, and Genera Chair of the 2005 International Conference on Acoustics Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP-05), Philadelphia PA. She was Distinguished Lecturer for the Signal Processing Society for 2017-2018 and is currently Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Aerospace & Electronics Systems Society. She is recipient of the 2005 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award, the 2012 IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award, is co-author (with B. Li) of the 2020 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award, and co-recipient (with B. Li) of the 2021 Barry Carlton Best Paper Award by IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society.

Abstract: Spectrum congestion in commercial wireless communications is a growing problem as high-data-rate applications become prevalent. On the other hand, frequency bands earmarked for exclusive use by radar are underutilized. Spectrum sharing is a new line of work that aims to enable radar and communication systems to share the same frequency bands efficiently by managing interference. The talk will cover recent results on cooperative spectrum sharing for the coexistence of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar and wireless communication systems. The two systems are jointly designed to maximize some quality metric for the radar subject to the communication system meeting certain operational constraints. In the second part of the talk, we present results on another form of spectrum sharing, namely, on dual-functional radar communication systems (DFRC). In DFRC systems communication information is conveyed by the radar probing signals, thus there is no interference between radar and communication functionalities. DFRC systems are of great interest in autonomous driving scenarios, where the same waveform can be used for sensing and for vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

The IEEE Region 8 2023-2024 Delegate-Elect/Director-Elect will be elected by the voting members of Region 8 in the 2022 IEEE Annual Election from the slate nominated by the R8 Committee. The Region 8 Committee will select the slate during the Region 8 Committee meeting either in the Fall of 2021 or the Spring of 2022.

The IEEE Region 8 2022 Vice-Chairs will be elected during the Region 8 Committee Meeting in the Fall of 2021. Note that the current Vice Chairs are eligible for re-election.
