Empowering Humanitarian Endeavors: Insights from February Workshop

Omar Salameh, IEEE Region 8 Humanitarian Activities Committee

In February, The IEEE Region 8 Humanitarian Activities Committee held a workshop for Humanitarian Projects and Teams Management where participants delved into crucial aspects of managing humanitarian volunteering groups, project coordination, and nurturing strong team-community relations.

The workshop was led by Dr Kennedy, Project Manager of FUTO CISCO Academy, Nigeria, and Chair of the MSR-Laboratories at FUTO, the workshop provided valuable insights into structuring SIGHT Groups, forging funding collaborations, and fostering membership growth. The attendees benefited from the precious experience of Dr Kennedy to extend their collaboration with industry leaders and local communities as he has spearheaded impactful projects, earning him over 32 awards and securing research grants exceeding £2M in Africa.

The workshop covered a range of topics, beginning with an exploration of IEEE Humanitarian Projects, shedding light on available opportunities from an IEEE perspective. Dr. Kennedy then delved into the nuances of effective team management in humanitarian projects, offering guidance on how SIGHT Groups can cultivate high-performing teams to address humanitarian opportunities.

A highlight of the session was the presentation of case studies and a group discussion, where Dr. Kennedy showcased best practices and examples from diverse humanitarian projects. Project leaders shared their experiences, detailing how they navigated challenges and achieved success, leaving a positive impact on their communities.

The workshop served as a platform for learning and sharing experiences, equipping participants with valuable knowledge to navigate the complexities of humanitarian projects and drive meaningful change in their communities. The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, providing attendees with the opportunity to seek further insights and clarification.

Accepting STEM Champion Applications until 8 April, 2024 (11:59pm EDT)

Are you an IEEE Volunteer conducting STEM outreach programs for pre-university students
and/or teachers in your local community on behalf of IEEE? Would you like to help inspire other
volunteers to get involved in STEM outreach? Then, we want to hear from you!

In June 2021 IEEE TryEngineering.org launched a new IEEE STEM Champion Program to
recognize IEEE volunteers for their contributions to STEM education and to build a community
of IEEE STEM outreach volunteers.

We are looking to add to our STEM Champion team. All active IEEE Members are invited to
submit an application no later than 8 April 2024 (11:59pm ET) to be considered as a STEM
Champion. Applications will be reviewed in late April and selections will be announced in early
May.

The Program resides under TryEngineering.org. The IEEE STEM Champion title is a
designation given to an individual IEEE volunteer and is not a Region or Section officer position.

What are the Benefits of Being Selected as a STEM Champion?
● Recognition for your contributions to pre-university STEM education
● Opportunity to be involved in a community of IEEE STEM outreach volunteers
● Grant funding opportunity
● Opportunity to build Region and Section awareness of your work
● Ability to support IEEE pre-university education by sharing your events and event results
● Access to Champion-specific pre-university STEM education resources

Submit an application no later than 8 April 2024 (11:59pm EDT)

IEEE Region 8 Student and Young Professional Congress 2024

Get ready for an unparalleled tech experience at the IEEE Region 8 Student and Young Professional Congress 2024, happening in the dynamic city of Grenoble, France, from July 15th to July 19th! Check the Congress website https://grenoble-2024.ieeer8syp.org/ and monitor social media to stay updated.

The IEEE R8 Students & Young Professionals Congress, or simply R8 SYP Congress, is one of the most famous and important events in Region 8. It is held every 2 years and brings together students and young professionals in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) from all sections in Region 8. It is an excellent opportunity for IEEE members to network and develop their technical and cross-disciplinary skills.

During the Congress, a wide variety of workshops and conferences are organized, dealing with exciting and up-to-the-minute technical subjects. At the same time, the conference offers training workshops on soft skills, essential for teamwork. In addition to this training program, social activities are planned to enable participants to exchange ideas and experience a wide range of cultures.

In its 14th edition, this biennial event is the largest gathering of students and young professionals in Region 8, attracting bright minds from diverse Sections worldwide. The congress is a melting pot of innovation, fostering engineering sense and capabilities, and providing a global platform for networking with industry leaders.

R8 Humanitarian Activities Congress

The Region 8 Humanitarian Activities Congress brings together SIGHT group members, humanitarian technology enthusiasts, and community development advocates from across Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Attendees have the opportunity to share results, lessons learned, and experiences, and to discuss and address various humanitarian and community development projects, promoting the use of technology for social good. This year, it will be held in parallel with the IEEE International Humanitarian Technology Conference (IEEE IHTC) at Politecnico di Bari (Bari, Italy) on November 27-30, 2024.

Deadline: 21 August 2024

In-person Participation Eligibility

In-person participation to the Congress will be fully funded along with 3-days of stay in Bari, Italy (shared rooms) to a limited number of participants with the following criteria to be applied:

  • Only one applicant per SIGHT group will be considered in the first selection round.
  • An endorsement letter from the SIGHT group or Section Chair must be provided.
  • Priority is given to SIGHT group officers.
  • The SIGHT group must have submitted at least two events in the past 12 months on vTools Events or been formed in 2024.
  • The SIGHT group must have a minimum of 6 registered IEEE and SIGHT members.
  • The SIGHT group of the applicant must have duly reported all main officers (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) on vTools Officers with a term starting date not older than January 1st, 2023.

If your application for funding is accepted:

  • You will be required to contribute to the Congress program by providing a presentation or designing a poster about your SIGHT group or your humanitarian project following organizers directions.
  • Participation is compulsory; missing the Congress will disqualify your SIGHT group from any R8 HTAC programs (i.e., Community Support Program, SIGHT Groups Accelerator Program, etc).

If your application for funding is rejected:

  • You will not be granted a funded registration for in-person participation at the Congress.
  • You may still register as a virtual participant for the Congress (we will inform you when this opportunity will become available).
  • You may also register and attend the IEEE International Humanitarian Technology Conference (IEEE IHTC).

Please note that priority for funding will be given to the most active SIGHT groups and the newest, as well as for those who contributed to successful humanitarian projects in the recent past. We aim to reward a diverse audience including those who contributed already and inspire the next generation of contributors towards the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies vision.
