Introduction

The IEEE Region 8 Action for Industry (AfI) Committee introduces this award with the goal of encouraging grassroot Section-level industry engagement activities and recognizing Section Industry Ambassadors (SIAs) who have made an outstanding contribution to improving industry engagement within their Section.

It serves to motivate SIAs, enhance membership value, and improve collaboration between IEEE Sections and industries, including corporates, SMEs, and startups. The Award is a USD 250 cash prize and a plaque.

Title

The award is known as the IEEE Region 8 Outstanding Section Industry Ambassador Award.

Eligibility

The following are eligible as candidates for the Award:

(a) An IEEE member of any membership grade who serves as a Section or Sub-Section Industry Ambassador in Region 8.

(b) The candidate’s volunteer work is, or has been, on behalf of a Section. The candidate must have been active in the SIA position for at least 1 year and is not currently the Section Chair.

(c) The candidate receives no remuneration for their work for the Section except possibly expenses.

(d) Current members of the Region 8 Awards and Recognition Committee, Region 8 Operations Committee, and the Region 8 Action for Industry Committee are ineligible for the Award.

Conditions for nomination

(a) Self-nominations are not allowed.

(b) Nominations must be submitted with an endorsement letter from the Section Chair or Secretary.

(c) The nomination must include at least two endorsement letters with at least one being from an industry partner.

(d) Nominations must be received through the IEEE OpenWater Platform (https://ieee.secure-platform.com/) as part of the annual Region 8 awards cycle.

(e) Nominations are expected to highlight significant tangible achievements as an outcome of the nominee’s program(s). Evidence is required to evaluate and verify any claims.

Basis of adjudication

The points which adjudicators will take into consideration include the following:

(a) Thoroughness and Clarity: The completeness of the provided information, ensuring it is sufficient to judge the nomination, alongside the overall structure and presentation of the nomination pack.

(b) Consistency of Activities: Whether the SIA consistently organized impactful industry activities and/or established or strengthened industry relations within the past year.

(c) Impact of Activities: Demonstrated contributions to IEEE and MGA goals, such as membership growth, enhanced member value, and fostering collaboration with industry. This includes the diversity of contributions, such as joint events, job fairs, promotion of entrepreneurship, and bridging the gap between academia and industry.

(d) Evidence of Accomplishments: The presence of clear, verifiable results and significant tangible achievements, such as new partnerships established, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed, internships or career opportunities facilitated, or the successful recruitment of new industry members. The focus is on results rather than merely the volume of events.

(e) Committee Engagement: The degree of the candidate’s involvement in IEEE Region 8 Action for Industry Committee activities, including attending training workshops, co-organizing webinars with partner companies, and similar initiatives.

Adjudication

The adjudicators are the members of the Awards Selection Committee, which consists of at least 4 members from the IEEE Region 8 Action for Industry Committee. The members are appointed by the Chair of the Action for Industry Committee for a one-year term. This committee is responsible for evaluating applications and providing the evaluated results to the IEEE Region 8 Awards and Recognition Committee, who manages the final awards schedule and presentation.

Introduction

The IEEE Region 8 Action for Industry (AfI) Committee introduces this award with the goal of recognizing Section-level initiatives that successfully foster and promote industry communities within the Region. This award serves to encourage Sections to continuously improve their activities, promote industry engagement, enhance IEEE membership value, and strengthen collaboration between IEEE Sections and corporate partners, SMEs, and startups.

The Award consists of a commemorative plaque and a USD 500 cash prize, which will be deposited directly into the winning Section’s operational budget to be used at their discretion for future activities.

Title

The award is known as the IEEE Region 8 Outstanding Section Achievement Award in Industry Engagement Activities.

Eligibility

The following are eligible as candidates for the Award:

(a) All official IEEE Sections and Sub-Sections operating within Region 8.

(b) The eligible Section or Sub-Section must have had an active Section Industry Ambassador (SIA) appointed during the past year.

Conditions for nomination

(a) Nominations must be submitted electronically through the IEEE OpenWater Platform during the annual Region 8 awards cycle.

(b) Self-nominations by the Section are permitted, provided the application includes a formal endorsement letter from the Section Chair or Secretary.

(c) The application package must also include at least two reference letters with one being from an external industry partner.

(d) Nominations are expected to highlight significant tangible achievements resulting from the Section’s industry programs during the past year.

(e) Verifiable evidence is required to evaluate any claims. Acceptable evidence includes, but is not limited to, events reported in IEEE vTools, OU Analytics data, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), social media links, reports, and formal partnership agreements.

Basis of adjudication

The points which adjudicators will take into consideration include the following:

(a) Consistency of Activities: Whether the Section consistently organized industry engagement activities or established and strengthened industry relations over the past year.

(b) Impact of Activities: Demonstrated contributions to overarching IEEE and MGA goals. This includes driving membership growth, enhancing member value, and fostering direct collaboration with industry, focusing strongly on direct outcomes rather than just the number of events.

(c) Evidence of Accomplishments: The presence of clear, tangible, and verifiable results. Significant achievements are defined as measurable outcomes such as establishing new partnerships, signing MoUs, facilitating internships or career opportunities, hosting joint events, or successfully recruiting new industry members.

(d) Innovation: The implementation of new, creative ideas, strategies, and initiatives designed to attract and retain industry interest in IEEE services.

(e) Thoroughness and Presentation: The completeness, clarity, and overall structure of the provided information within the nomination pack, ensuring judges have sufficient data to accurately assess the Section’s efforts.

Adjudication

The adjudicators are the members of an official Awards Selection Committee, consisting of at least four members appointed from within the IEEE Region 8 Action for Industry Committee. The members serve a one-year term aligned with the Action for Industry Committee’s term and are eligible for reappointment.

The Selection Committee is responsible for independently evaluating all applications based on the aforementioned criteria. Upon completion, they provide the finalized evaluation results to the IEEE Region 8 Awards and Recognition Committee, which oversees the final awards schedule, funding transfers, and the formal presentation of the award during the Fall Region 8 Meeting.

Region 8 Standards Coordination

IEEE standards play a central role in advancing technology, supporting interoperability, and enabling global innovation. IEEE standards activities include both the development of technical standards and raising awareness and participation in the standards development process.

 

In Region 8, standards coordination focuses primarily on promoting awareness of IEEE standards and encouraging engagement with the  IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (Region 8). The Region 8 Standards Coordinator operates within the Technical Activities structure of IEEE Region 8.

Role of the Region 8 Standards Coordinator

The Region 8 Standards Coordination supports IEEE standards awareness and engagement across the region and serves as a communication bridge between Region 8 and the IEEE Standards Association. The Region 8 Standards Coordinator aims to:

  • Promote IEEE standards and standardisation activities within Region 8.
  • Encourage participation in IEEE standards development initiatives.
  • Strengthen collaboration between Region 8 and the IEEE Standards Association.
  • Facilitate communication channels for sharing information on IEEE standards initiatives, projects, and events relevant to members in the region.

Key Activities in Region 8

  • Promote IEEE Standards Association meetings, workshops, and events taking place within Region 8.
  • Support awareness and participation in activities organised through the IEEE SA Awareness Programme.
  • Share announcements regarding standards awards, recognition programmes, participation, and funding opportunities relevant to Region 8 members.

IEEE standards development is primarily carried out by experts working within IEEE societies, technical communities, and standards working groups. Within Region 8, standards-related technical work is often associated with local chapters or IEEE members with specialised expertise. The role of Region 8 committees and sections is therefore primarily focused on raising awareness of IEEE standards and encouraging participation in the standards development process.

We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming IEEE Region 8 Volunteer Training Series ‘VTS’ workshop, taking place on 18 – 19 July 2025 in Verdi Tunis Beach Resort, Gammarth – Tunis, Tunisia.

This workshop brings together current and future IEEE leaders from across Region 8 to collaborate, share best practices, learn skills and grow as effective leaders in our global community. This training is designed for newly elected Membership Development Officers, Chapter Coordinators, Chapter Chairs, Section Chairs, and Chair-Elects.

The IEEE Region 8 Volunteer Leadership Training (VLT) is your opportunity to:

  • Learn practical tools for leading successful chapters and organizing impactful events,

  • Form strategies to grow and retain membership using IEEE tools and analytics,

  • Receive guidance on chapter formation, funding, and working with IEEE Sections,

  • Gain insights into annual planning, reporting, and aligning with IEEE goals,

  • Opportunities to network, share experiences, and collaborate across Region 8.

  • Tunis Airport transfer to/from Verdi Tunis beach resort (approx. 20 km) is provided by the hotel free of charge for the IEEE participants.

  • Airline and other attendance costs to/from the event venue must be arranged independently. Please check with your Section Chair / Treasurer for support.

  • Additional nights of accommodation must be booked individually.
