IEEE Region 8 Student Branch Website Contest 2019

Dear IEEE Student Members,

We hope you’ve had a productive and enjoyable university semester as members of your IEEE Student Branches.

We would like to draw your attention to the upcoming IEEE Region 8 Student Branch Website Contest. While social media is usually the primary platform to advertise student branch events, to reach out to all potential members a functional and up-to-date website is essential. Maintaining a website is also a fantastic way to practice your web design skills and looks great on any student portfolio!

Each year we celebrate the top three student branch websites in Region 8, the winner of this award can then proceed to compete globally for some fantastic prizes!

Websites are evaluated on five separate criteria, including Content, Navigation, Originality, Presentation, Portability and Load time.If are a member of an IEEE Student Branch which has a fantastic website worthy of an award, please submit your entries via this online form.

Full details on this award can be found on the IEEE MGA Awards Website.

  • Please note: The nomination deadline is 15th July 2019.

Should you have any questions regarding the application process, or concerning general Student Branch matters, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best Regards,

Top 3 IEEEXtremers are from R8!

This year’s IEEE Xtreme 2015 Programming Competition results are tremendous for IEEE Region 8. From 2468 teams, top three places held by the teams from R8.
“Team Name” from Iran, “EPFL1” from Switzerland and “Powerhouse” from Romania successfully top three respectively, and their background shows us these achievements are not just luck.

“Team Name” members; Mohammad Ostadmohammadi, Saeed Ilchi Ghazaan and Majid Farhadi are quite successful students. Saeed is international gold and national silver medal winner and Majid is national gold and silver winner in Computer Olympiads. Simply, they were already prepared for competition.

“EPFL1” members Jakub Tarnawski, Andrii Maksai and Alfonso Peterssen are also promising in their student life. Jakub ( originally from Poland ) is PhD student and his research area is graph algorithms. Andrii (originally from Ukraine) is a PhD candidate in Computer Vision Lab. Alfonso (originally from Cuba ) is an undergraduate student. About them is two things common, enthusiasm for programming for long years and they are not originally swiss. All of them coding as a hobby and when competition time comes, they were already prepared too.

“Powerhouse” members Alexandru Nechifor, Dan-Constantin Spătărel and Mihai-Dan Gheorghe are can be considered as successful like the other team members above. Alexandru is received IRES-8 scholarship from EU and currently funded with 3 month PhD exchange between the University of Manchester in UK and Tsinghua University in China. Dan-Constantin is a PhD student in Computer Science in Bucharest university and among that he is a medal hunter in several international olympiads. Mihai Dan is undergraduate student, but a vital member of the team. He is also a winner of bronze medal in an international olympiad.

As Student Activities Committee (SAC), we’re Xtremely happy to see those teams achievements and congratulate them with our heart.

Region 8 Website Contest 2014

Dear Regional Website Contest 2014 participants,

The IEEE Region 8 SAC team is very pleased to announce the official results of the Regional Website Contest 2014. After challenging evaluation process, which covered 35 websites (new R8 record!) the SAC team has chosen 3 best websites, which will represent R8 in the IEEE Global Website Contest 2014.

These are:
– 1st place: IEEE Student Branch JKU Linz (Austria Section): http://www.ieee.jku.at/

Congratulations for this excellent results and many, many thanks to all Student Branches for their participation in the contest. Comparing to the last year, we have noticed many positive changes ! The presentation of the contents as well as the design of the templates with related graphics was so much improved that the difference between particular websites was really small. The places on our list ranking differ only by 1 – 3 points ! We wish we could qualify more websites for the IEEE Global Website Contest 2014 but according to the rules we can choose the 3 best entries only.

Dear R8 SB members, we really admire your effort in creating your websites. You did an amaizng job ! And remember, we are looking forward for your submissions in 2015 !

On behalf of R8 SAC,
Piotr Graca, Awards & Contests Coordinator

Description

IEEEmadC (Mobile Application Development Contest) is a student contest focused on developing mobile applications. In this contest, teams of up to three students are invited to devise and create mobile applications that will benefit IEEE in the terms stated in the “Application focus areas” chapter of this document. This contest was created to provide IEEE students with additional competitive activities in the scope of computer science. By competing, students would focus on developing their technical and social (team) skills, since the prizes are arranged in a way to encourage teamwork. IEEEmadC is giving Student Branches an additional way for attracting the students to join IEEE since only active student members of IEEE are eligible to compete.

Eligibility

Students are invited to compete individual or in teams of up to three IEEE student members. Any undergraduate, graduate or phd student with an active IEEE membership can compete. Multiple teams can be formed at the same university (same IEEE Student Branch). Each team can submit up to 3 different applications. One student can be part of 2 different teams (i.e. one designer can create design for two different teams). Teams must adhere to the deadline timetable defined on this page, or else their submissions will be invalid. Teams must not accept or use any help from people not in their team. Usage of free and/or open source Internet resources is allowed, but plagiarism and cheating is not.

Registration

In registration period Students can register their teams and submit their ideas for the idea stage. Teams do not need to submit any working application in this stage, only description of the application they would be working on.

Scoring criteria

Every application is evaluated in 4 categories with certain number of points for each category. Final score is consisted by sum of all points from every category.

Category Points % (of final score) Explanation
UI Design: 0-30 30% judges assign points in range 0-30
User Experience (UX): 0-20 20% judges assign points in range 0-20
Usefulness: 0-20 20% judges assign points in range 0-20
Availability: 5-30 30% (from 0 to 15) + (n*5);
n is number of supported platforms (max 3)

Selection and Notification of winners

Winners are selected exclusively on the basis of overall score obtained from each judge during the evaluation phase. The scores from each of the categories are summed to obtain the overall score. Winners will be additionally notified by email before the public release of the contest results. All winners will be awarded with smartphone, tablet or money prize.

Winners Categories

Team Winner:

Best team application will be selected based on the best overall score from the all scoring categories mentioned above. This is the IEEEmadC most prestigious award.

Best Design Winner:

In this category judges are focused on overall design of the mobile application UI (User Interface). Winner application will be one that will get best score in UI Design category.

Highest Popularity App:

All submitted applications will be presented on IEEEmadC Facebook pagewith screenshot and video that shows functionality of the application. The application that gets the highest number of likes on Facebook page will be the winner application. Anyone can like the applications.

Computer Society Winner:

This is special category for the IEEE Computer Society members. Winner team members must be Computer Society student members and they will be selected by Computer Society representatives. Since this is the special category all teams (including the winner teams from three categories above) have chances to win it.
