Climate Change
Overview
Climate Change & Sustainability is a global challenge, recognized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Many regions of the world have set ambitious policies. Besides these public policies, a wide movement of energy transition and decarbonization is taking place.
This Climate Change & Sustainability challenge was identified by IEEE as a major opportunity for the association to bring together members from around the different Organizational Units (OUs) working for a common goal. Several initiatives have been launched and are recognized by the Board of Directors.
Activities concerning Environmental Engineering Technologies have been proposed over the past 10 years within the IEEE. There appears to be institutional support present across the entire IEEE at different levels of volunteer participation ranging from students to senior level engineers at high levels of leadership, across a wide range of societies and councils.
With its diversity, Region 8 can bring original solutions to Environmental issues. There is also an expectation from our members to be part of the discussion. Technical exchanges, conferences or DLPs programs have been successful.
2026 Team
Ad-hoc Committee Activities for 2026
- Compilation of R8 activities (to be pursued)
- CCC page on the R8 site. YouTube presence. In progress.
- Links to Sustech Initiative (underway / Planet Positive)
- Contact with the IEEE “CC community” and the TAB “Technical CC Community” (in progress, TSCMO & SICDP)
- Technology for a Sustainable Climate Matrix Organization & The Sustainable Infrastructures and Community Development program
Strategic Planning
- Main “theme” proposed for the actions of the Committee: Environmental Technologies
- Goal to achieve within 2 years: R8 Portfolio Conference dedicated to the Environment, Climate Change and associated “Sustainability” or “Resilience”
- Goal for 2026: Prepare a strong and well-developed proposal for presentation at the R8 Glasgow Committee meeting.
- Specific objectives:
- Ask all sections to appoint a contact point in order to gather material, if available.
- Promote material via a You Tube Channel: on-line presentations & webinars.
- Create a specific page on the Region website for the Committee.
Proposition: Region 8 Portfolio Conference on Environmental Engineering Technologies
- Interdisciplinary forum for the entire scientific and professional community
- Integrate IEEE and academic research, R&D, industry, associations, standards and regulatory bodies for promoting the environmental engineering concept:
- New specific technologies and methodologies
- Disseminate technologies, methodologies, standards, and best practices
- Stimulate eco-innovation in technology and methodology
- Support socio-economic policy and decision making for a sustainable future
