Who Was Clementina Saduwa?

Clementina Saduwa was a dedicated and tireless student leader and an exceptionally effective IEEE volunteer during the revival of the IEEE Nigeria Section. She later became the first IEEE Region 8 Women in Engineering (WIE) Coordinator.

In January 2007, Clementina was killed in a random act of violence at the age of 29, leaving behind her husband and young daughter.

May her soul rest in peace.

Objectives of the Award

To honor Clementina and pay tribute to her years of service, IEEE Region 8 named this prestigious award after her. The Clementina Saduwa Award recognizes an outstanding woman engineer who, through her engineering and career achievements, has demonstrated noteworthy support for women in the profession and established a record of excellence.

Nominations will be reviewed jointly by the IEEE Region 8 WIE Committee and the IEEE Region 8 Awards and Recognition Sub-Committee, which will select the winner.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The selection of the winner will be based on several criteria, including the candidate’s curriculum vitae, personal statement, challenges encountered while developing her professional career, reference letters, and other supporting information.

The eligible candidate must:

• Be an active woman engineer working in one of the fields of interest of IEEE.
• Be an IEEE member whose engineering and career achievements have been accomplished in one or more countries within IEEE Region 8.
• Submit a personal statement of no more than 750 words describing her career goals, the challenges and obstacles she has faced throughout her career, and how she overcame them.
• Be supported by at least two signed endorsement letters submitted by the nominator. The nominator may be a non-IEEE member. Letters must be written by individuals qualified to evaluate the candidate’s achievements, such as colleagues, teachers, or other professional references. Additional endorsement letters from public or private organizations may also be submitted.
• Not have previously received the Clementina Saduwa Award. The award may be presented to an individual only once.

Award and Presentation

The winner of the Clementina Saduwa Award will receive USD 1,000. The award will be presented during an IEEE Region 8 Meeting.

The Section Affinity Group of the Year Award recognizes the activities and achievements of an outstanding Women in Engineering (WIE) Section Affinity Group within IEEE Region 8. Eligible activities must have taken place between January 1 and December 31 of the year for which the nomination is being considered. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality and impact of the activities, collaborative efforts to support professional growth, and the quality of the submitted report.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by the IEEE Region 8 WIE Committee, which will select the winning Section Affinity Group. The selected group will then be validated by the IEEE Region 8 Awards and Recognition Sub-Committee.

The following criteria will be considered when reviewing applications:

1. The applicant or nominee must be an approved WIE Section Affinity Group within IEEE Region 8 that conducted activities and events between January 1 and December 31 of the year for which the nomination is being considered.
2. The application must include a clear and concise report documenting the group’s activities, including dates, content, number of attendees, academic or industry partners, and the impact of the events. The report must not exceed 1,000 words and should include photographs. A report submitted in the form of PowerPoint slides is also accepted.
3. All members of the Section Affinity Group must be listed in the application.
4. Both self-applications and nominations are accepted. Any member of the Section Affinity Group may apply for the award, and any member of the relevant Section may nominate the Section’s WIE Affinity Group.

The winning IEEE Region 8 WIE Section Affinity Group will receive an award of USD 450.

Nominations and applications must be submitted through the IEEE Region 8 Awards Portal.

The Student Affinity Group of the Year Award recognizes the activities and achievements of an outstanding Women in Engineering (WIE) Student Affinity Group within IEEE Region 8. Eligible activities must have taken place between January 1 and December 31 of the year for which the nomination is being considered. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality and impact of the activities, collaborative efforts to improve student engagement, and the quality of the submitted report.

The IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Awards Program recognizes WIE members and Affinity Groups that have made outstanding contributions to IEEE WIE, their communities, and the engineering profession. These contributions are demonstrated through dedication to and involvement in projects and activities that support the goals and objectives of IEEE WIE. Women engineers are among the most distinguished contributors to the engineering profession.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by the IEEE Region 8 WIE Committee, which will select the winning student volunteer. The selected candidate will then be validated by the IEEE Region 8 Awards and Recognition Sub-Committee.

The following criteria will be considered when reviewing applications:

1. The applicant or nominee must be a WIE student member in good standing.
2. The activities and events cited in support of the application or nomination must have taken place between January 1 and December 31 of the year for which the nomination is being considered.
3. The application must include one endorsement letter from the nominee’s Section Chair, highlighting the student volunteer’s achievements and contributions to the Affinity Group.
