IEEE R8 50th Student Paper Contest

 in SPC 2017

It is time to start thinking about the R8 Student Paper Contest for 2017. This will be the 50th Contest. Last year there were 30 students from more than twenty different Student Sections. The papers are judged by an international R8 jury, and as usual the students submitting the five chosen papers will have an oral presentation at one of the prime IEEE R8 conferences. This year it will be IEEE R8 Eurocon 2017 in July at Ohrid, Macedonia.

The travel and accomodation will be funded by IEEE R8. There will also be three prizes for the first three papers, chosen after the oral presentation. The prizes are US$800, US$500 and US$200 respectively.

The student branch of the student who wins first prize also gets as an award the Region 8 “Dick Poortvielt Award” of US$250.

So I encourage Student Branch Counsellors to encourage students to prepare themselves and participate. Ideally there would be a student paper contest organised within the student section to choose the best paper. Further information regarding deadlines will be posted soon.

This year’s IEEE Day is held on 4th October 2016.
Worldwide celebration of IEEE day, every year is hosted by members.
Each year, members are encouraged to host events, parties, competitions and festivities to join together and collaborate on new ideas!
This year is the 7th annual celebration year and it’s popularity is growing exponentially (2010 – 80 events, 2015 – 600 events) To get involved, take a look at the IEEE Day website  for inspiration and promotional materials.

IEEE PES Renewable Engineering in Schools (RES)

Call for IEEE PES Student Chapters around the world to join the “IEEE PES Renewable Engineering in Schools” (RES). This project has approved finance support of the PES Member Drive Initiatives (2016). The RES project will support with educational kits to PES Student Chapters visit and teach about renewable energy in primary and high schools until the end 2016.

IEEE TISP Week 2016

IEEE Region 8 Education Activities Committee is organizing the  ‘IEEE Region 8 Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) Week’ from 8-16 October, 2016. The event will have multiple IEEE Sections organizing TISP teacher training workshops in their Sections. TISP workshops have IEEE-trained volunteers providing inquiry based science education training to school teachers based on the lesson plans provided on tryengineering.org and trycomputing.org. They’ll follow up the workshops with regular contact with the school teachers to evaluate impact.

The aim of the event is to

  1. train school teachers to conduct inquiry based science education (IBSE) hands-on activities in the classroom;
  2. train teachers on how to motivate students in the classroom toward a better understanding of engineering;
  3. highlight the excellent work being done by our Sections to promote TISP in their localities;
  4. re-energize the inactive TISP volunteers into organizing a TISP teacher training workshops in the Section;
  5. gather data from school teachers about the impact of the TISP program in their classroom.

The following Sections are organizing a workshop as part of TISP Week with about 600 teachers being planned to be trained – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malta, Palestine (sub-Section), Spain, Tunisia, UAE and Uganda.

Congratulations to the winners of the first edition of MtG!

 in Mind the Gap!

Out of 17 competing teams from 10 countries, the winners are:

  • First Prize: Escape the Gap! by Zlatko Ofak and Meri Tukac
  • Second Prize: Giving Agency by Joao Santos, Carina Fonseca, Miguel Dias, and Diogo Mesquita
  • Third Prize: GG-M: Generation Gap Mobile by Wafa Ben Hmida and Ikbel Azaiez
  • It is worth mentioning that the fourth prize goes to Break the Gap Camp by Skander Mansouri, Slim Bouakez, and Ahlem Jedidi. Results were close!
