PEAsC Programs

Professional and Educational activities have a great variety of Programs and Contests in order to serve its goals and mission.

Local Language program

The Local Language program is intended to promote activities (online or in person) and online content in different countries, aside from English, in Region 8.

This program promotes IEEE content and its areas across the entire Region 8 and has funds available to help these activities be developed.

Currently, Region 8 is looking for ambassadors who will arrange several events in their selected local languages. Each ambassador can be nominated in more than one language if they are available.

IEEE R8 Robot Championship

The IEEE R8 Robot Championship aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among IEEE members, and s will focus on STEM communication, entrepreneurship, creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.

It will take place in Malta, Europe, in Autumn 2022, and is open to students in pre-university and university communities.

Organised by IEEE Malta Section, IEEE Region 8, IEEE Malta Computer Society, and Professional and Educational Subcommittee.

IEEE R8 Robot Championship STEM initiative

After being accepted into the Robot Championship 2022, each team of roboteers will need to apply for at least two STEM activities.

These two activities must be performed before the physical event in Malta.

This is a mandatory aspect of the championship.

PEA Speakers Program

PEA Speakers program is a platform through which distinguished and experienced professionals can share their valuable knowledge in PEAsC’s fields of interest to IEEE Region 8 members and help them by providing guidance on developing useful skills for their professional life.

The program contains two tiers of Speaker profiles: Distinguished Speakers and Experienced Speakers.

TISP Week

During a specific week of the year, which is called TISP Week, Sections are encouraged to organize TISP Workshops. The lesson plan materials for the workshop are reimbursed by EAB.

Acceleration Contest

Proposals on new educational programs are received, for each educational level (pre-university, university, continuing education). The proposal is evaluated by a judging committee and a Seed Funding Prize is given to the winner of each educational level.

Alpha Engineers

alphaThe program requires sections to organize activities aimed at promoting engineering to pre-university pupils, teachers, and parents.

Activities that are eligible for this project are: TISP workshops, TISP 2.0 (organizing a TISP workshop for children), career talks for pupils, talks for parents, webinars for promoting engineering in schools, training sessions for working with children for IEEE volunteers. After submitting the events they have organized and supporting evidence for the events, they will get different points depending on what activities they performed.

Entrepreneurship Week

Sections are called to organize events that promote Entrepreneurship during Global Entrepreneurship Week (NOVEMBER 18–24, 2019) where talks will be given by CEOs and startuppers, informing participants how to run a business, followed by workshops and hands-on activities.

In these events, Sections are encouraged to organize pitching contests and winners will have to opportunity to participate in a Regional Pitching Contest, be mentored by Action for Industry mentors, and get seed funding for their startup.
Speakers from the PEA Speakers program can hold workshops in Entrepreneurship Week Events.

Obituary of David Okereafor

Dear Region 8 members,

It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the passing away of David Okereafor, IEEE Nigeria Section member and dedicated young volunteer.

I would like to share with you his obituary prepared by Rapahel Onoshakpor, IEEE Nigeria Section Chair.

Please join me in conveying our condolences to his family and his Section.

Sincerely,
Magdalena Salazar Palma
IEEE Region 8 Delegate and Director

DAVID TOBECHUKWU OKEREAFOR
IEEE NIGERIA SECTION WEBMASTER
(December, 1990 – April, 2019)

IEEE Nigeria Section has lost a rare gem: David Tobechukwu Okereafor who was an exceptional IEEE volunteer and the youngest mentor. He was born on December 31, 1990 at Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria to late Mr Eugene Ozoemela Okereafor and Mrs Georginia Chijioke Okereafor. He was the youngest of five (5) siblings. He died on April 17, 2019, at the National Hospital, Abuja.

David graduated in 2014 from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) with B.Eng (Second Class (Hons), Upper Division) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Communication Engineering Option). He was a skilled Engineer, Embedded-Systems developer, Internet of Things (IoT), robots and unmanned ground vehicles.

David was an IEEE volunteer starting from his first year at university. He was the Chair at FUTO Student Branch (SB) from 2011 to 2013. He nurtured the FUTO SB till his graduation in 2014. During his time at university, he organised student paper contests, programming tutorials and encouraged students to participate in Extreme Programming competitions and made many other notable contributions. David was the curator of the IEEE Nigeria Section students’ robotics competitions. Until his demise, David was the IEEE Nigeria Section Webmaster and the Secretary of the Robotics and Automation Society, Nigeria Chapter. He was also the webmaster for the IEEE/PES Power Africa 2019 website. He designed and maintained websites for numerous IEEE Conferences organised in Nigeria, in addition to building conference paper submission portals and more. His work and personality will be dearly missed.

He was laid to rest on Friday 26th of April 2019. May his soul rest in peace.

IEEE Inspiring Leaders

The activity “IEEE Inspiring Leaders”, seeks to bring IEEE leaders closer to student and Young Professional IEEE members, in order to motivate and inspire them.

The activity consists of an open interview-discussion, in which the panelists and other IEEE members will be asked about different aspects of their professional life and their experience in IEEE. In this manner, the event attempts to gain an insight into who are the leaders of IEEE.

The activity focuses on the human side of our participants, so it will not be a technical presentation. Therefore, no preparation for the activity is expected to be required. Just the will to have fun and have a relaxed conversation with other fellow IEEE members.

The activity will take place on Saturday 12 before lunch, in a slot specifically assigned to it (i.e. it will not collide with the R8 meeting).
